Blocks from behind–Losing what no one else is trying to win

Blocks from behind, when the receiver is headed towards the goal, are rare.  They happen in the endzone occasionally, when the defender catches up or on bad throws or because the receiver runs out of room.

But getting a block on, say, a handler who has cut up the line instead of going for a dump is rare.  First of all the cutter actually has to get there, and good defenders should not allow that cut.  Second, the throw has to sit long enough to give the defender time to catch up, which usually it won’t and which the defender almost never can.  Third the defender has to find some kind of angle to make the play.

Only two instances of this kind of block come to mind.  Both are from basically meaningless games played about a decade apart.  One is by Crockford, the other by Big Bob Lobel.

Crockford’s came after Ben roasted him up the line with a “Fuck You Seth,” the block Crock then gets thus one of the better “In Your Face” plays of all time–and to his credit, Ben loved it.

Big Bob’s had less pre-throw theatrics, but he also had longer to run and higher to lay out to make the play.  And when he hit the ground, as usual, field go boom.
